And just like that, reality has returned to us. No longer cloaked in shadow, for one final time, we can see her as she is. This is it. Not a particularly good picture, but this is the final picture I ever took of the SS United States with my DSi. As my favorite subject literally sailed off into the sunset, I snapped one final picture of her. The subject and camera that inspired my hobby of photography in the first place. When I woke up that morning, I was extremely upset about the fate of the SS United States. However, this experience of spending 8 or 9 hours chasing her down the Delaware River actually gave me some closure. The next nearest park along the river was way too far away to justify lengthening the return trip home, and there's no guarantee that I’d see much of anything in the darkness. Whenever we would stop to see her in Philadelphia, we would also eat at the Wendy’s across the street. You always got a great look at her prow as you ate. I decided to carry on the tradition. I hadn’t eaten yet that day, so I went to the nearest Wendy’s. It was really sketchy, but I barely gave it much thought. I was hungry, and I had a lot to process. I even texted my boyfriend, telling him how weird it is to look out the window and not see her there. It was almost a 3 hour drive home, and when I got there, I texted my boyfriend again, saying “Gosh, being out in the cold all day gives me a new appreciation for my warm cozy bed. My hands were so numb that I couldn't articulate the joints in my thumb”
